Hi Baby Bears!
Here’s a big, warm welcome to the first post in my new series: talent of the month!
Each month, I’ll be sharing one of my favorite Roman talents with you from the world of vintage fashion, local designers, and artisan jewelers, goldsmiths, and sculptors.
We start with one of my all time favorites, Glauco Cambi, who has spent nearly the last 30 years adorning Rome’s discerning clientele with the brightest and best in burnished, sculpted jewelry.
Established in 1992, Glauco Cambi’s workshop reflects the artist’s deep dedication to diversity. Visit and you’ll find an enviable selection of rings, bracelets, chains, necklaces, earrings and pendants.
Glauco Cambi is traditionally a goldsmith. But he in no way limits himself to this precious metal. Silver, bronze, titanium, and even niello pieces contribute to his ever-expanding collection, ensuring whatever your style may be, you’ll find something that stands out for you.
When you visit his studio, you might find it’s not the jewelry that catches your eye, but his curious collection of artworks – or ‘artwax’ as he calls them.
For 14 years, Clauco Cambi has been putting wax’s unique qualities – its denseness, luminosity, transparency, and pigmentations – to enthralling use by creating a series of paintings. They deal mainly with two themes: space (through representations of urban landscapes) and memory (through figurative artworks).
You might have thought that the Eternal City lends itself well to such themes, being so rich in ancient architectural wonders. But Glauco Cambi’s themes are modern, introspective, and richly immersive. His figures, like his art, are timeless: distinctly Italian, but of an indiscernible era.
Glauco’s studio is situated between the Vatican City and Castel Sant’Angelo – formerly the mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian, later a papal fortress, and now one of the best museums in Rome.
Visitors to Rome should combine a visit to his studio with a visit to both these attractions. Fortunately for you, Mamma Bear is also a licensed tour guide and runs tours of the Vatican, meaning we can pack a healthy mixture of retail therapy and cultural nourishment into our day in the Eternal City.
At the bottom, you’ll find links to Glauco Cambi’s pages so you can look him up yourself. But remember: when in Rome, what better way of immersing yourself in its burgeoning art and fashion scene than by joining a born-and-bred Roman on a custom shopping experience!
Until next time Baby Bears!
